I am currently teaching 3rd grade in San Diego, California. I teach all subjects and primarily focus on writing, math, I.B., and E.L.D. I am entering my 16th year of teaching. I love to share ideas and tips on my youtube channel, https://www.youtube.com/c/KateTheSleepyTeacher
My Teaching Style
Building relationships is key. Students who feel a connection to their teacher and classroom generally work harder. Therefore, I need to know what motivates them, but I also need to know what they struggle with. Once I have this information, I can properly set attainable but high standards for each of my students. One of my favorites ways to do this is through student agency. It is important to give my students a voice and choice in their learning. Additionally, I believe that if I am not excited to teach a lesson, I can't expect my students to be excited to learn it. Therefore, I love to make learning interactive and relevant to my students. The best way to do this is through the use of real-world concepts and engaging activities.
Honors / Awards / Shining teacher moment
Professionally I love when my former students return to share their accomplishments with me as well as tell me where they are headed next in life. Personally I am very proud to have furthered my education to earn a masters degree. I completed my degree with honors in 2014.
My own educational history
I graduated in 2002 with my teaching credential. I then taught in Costa Rica in a 2nd grade classroom at an American School. Upon returning the States, I worked as a special needs tutor as well as working as an intervention teacher for grade 2-5. My main focus was on reading and math. After that, I began working full time in the classroom. I have currently spent the last decade teaching 3rd grade.
